sometimes you just have to say something...

and today was one of those days.  Since moving to Canada in 2001 I have developed a thicker skin in regards to  the negative and downright derrogatory remarks made about "americans" by those around me.  Most people, when they realize what they have said in front of an American either drop the subject or apologize.  For the record, I am not overly patriotic really- I keep a low profile and other than my southern drawl/accent which comes out only on rare occassions- and my constant use of "yall" as a pronoun and my questions about things like block heaters,  perogies, and the like, I tend to try to blend in and not respond to the little digs that are directed to "Americans"

A coworker was going on and on about how Americans run auto insurance and how the auto insurance plan works, etc.  Its clear she hasn't a clue about it... and then when I told her no, thats not how it works she said something that if the Canadians were like the Americans we wouldnt have to have car insurance either ( she was saying that a large percentage of Americans drove without auto insurance and the reason they could get away with it is because they sue over every little thing).. because in Canada we don't sue over every little thing, etc.  I know Americans sometimes joke about the sue-happy attitude that sometimes is evident, but still.. its not like most of the Americans I knew and still know are out looking for reasons to sue... and not every American is running around trying to get away with driving without insurance, etc.  I told her she was misinformed and she just kept on till I lost it and I told her she didn't know a damn thing about Americans or the United States... I got up from the table and left and she started in on "gee relax, etc its just auto insurance with a snarky attitude, I stopped, turned around and told her  "I suggest you keep your mouth shut" and left.

I was furious.  I  really have reached the end of my patience with this particular person bad mouthing Americans... this is about the third of fourth time she has done something like this on top of a zillion other things she has tried to pass off as the gospel truth.    She is a bitter, lonely person and I had just hours earlier tried to think positive things about her, and then this happens.  I rarely lose my temper but when I do... and in a humorous note, all I could think about was that Merle Haggard line"

When you're  runnin' down my country, hoss,
you're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
